Sondre Lerche - 2/8 @ CDU

with JBM

sondre

Sondre Lerche was born in Bergen, Norway. Growing up, Lerche was heavily influenced by the ’80s pop that emanated from his older siblings’ rooms. Compelled by a defining fascination for bands such as A-ha, the Beach Boys, and Prefab Sprout, Lerche began formal guitar instruction at age eight. Not being satisfied with classical lessons, Lerche’s teacher introduced him to Brazilian music (such as Bossa Nova) and thus formed the foundation of Lerche’s vast array of complex melodies and chords throughout his music today. At age fourteen, Lerche penned his first song titled, “Locust Girl.” Lerche performed acoustic gigs at the club where his sister worked while he was still under age, and was ‘discovered’ by Norwegian producer H.P. Gundersen. Under Gundersen’s mentorship, Lerche was exposed to diverse music genres, including psychedelia, 60’s pop, and mainstream Brazilian music, broadening his appreciation for eclectic music styles. Around this time Lerche also met up with Oslo-based manager Tatiana Penzo, leading up to a deal with Virgin Norway. His popularity in his home country increased steadily, and in 2000 he recorded his debut album, Faces Down.

Screaming Females - 2/11 @ CDU

with JEFF the Brotherhood

screaming

‘Bred in one of the country’s strongest DIY punk communities, the New Brunswick, New Jersey-based trio Screaming Females have actually got only one shrieking lady. Her name is Marissa Paternoster, and she is 2009’s answer to Sleater-Kinney’s 2006 breakup, using her throaty pipes and serious chops to channel that trio’s femme-shredder legacy to a new generation. The band’s pint-size leader — whose signature stage attire includes a mandarin Sergeant Pepper-style dress and a bowl haircut covering her eyes — is known for ripping until her fingers bleed.’ -Rolling Stone

Akron Family - 2/20 @ CDU

With The Lovell Sisters

with Warpaint

akron

Akron/Family is a folk-influenced experimental rock band that formed in 2002, and its members currently live in New York City and Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Though each member of the band—Dana Janssen, Seth Olinsky, and Miles Seaton—can be relegated to loosely defined roles (drummer, vocalist/guitarist, and bassist, respectively), all of them in fact play several instruments and sing, as evidenced by their shows and recorded material: Live, the band uses improvisation and three-part harmonies in prominence. On their self-titled debut record, field recordings of a creaking chair, thunderclaps and the white noise of a television find their way alongside psychedelic and electronic elements, guitars and a glockenspiel.

Indigo Girls and Brandi Carlile - 3/1 @ The Moon

indigo copy

It’s been two decades since the Indigo Girls launched their career with their independently released debut album, 1987’s Strange Fire. Now, after entertaining millions of fans with their 10 major-label studio albums (nine on Epic Records and one, 2006’s Despite Our Differences, on Hollywood Records), Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have come full circle with the independent release of their new 2-CD album, Poseidon And The Bitter Bug, on their new label IG Recordings, distributed through Vanguard Records.

Before signing to a major record label, Brandi Carlile with twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth, performed in local Seattle establishments like The Crocodile, Tractor Tavern, and Paragon. Carlile sold their self-released recordings during their local performances. Carlile began to attract the attention of the music industry after Dave Matthews heard her band perform at the 2003 Sasquatch! Music Festival.
ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy featured three of her songs: “Tragedy”, “What Can I Say”, and “Throw it All Away”. In April 2007, Grey’s Anatomy debuted a version of the video for the single “The Story” interspersed with footage from the show. On 3 May 2007, a special two-hour episode of the show featured Carlile’s song “Turpentine” during footage of the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, Private Practice. Carlile’s song “The Story” has been featured in a General Motors commercial aired during the Beijing Olympic Games, as well as in a Super Bock commercial.
